The Tragic Origins of the Ford's GT40 MKIV
The Ford's GT40 MKIV's origins are marred by tragedy, beginning in 1966 with the J-Car just after the Le Mans race. During a test drive, Ken Miles crashed the car on an embankment, and it burst into flames. This heavy-hearted history led Ford back to the drawing board, resulting in the MKIV chassis. Only 10 of these were made, and only half of them ever actually raced in two major events: Sebring '67 and Le Mans '67.
One of the MKIV renditions, the J7 chassis, was fortunate enough to make it to the famous Le Mans track. Painted in a copper color and bearing the #3, it sped through the raceway with Andretti at the helm. He had maintained an impressive second-place position for most of the race when he came in for a standard pit stop. Seconds after Andretti, his teammate, A.J. Foyt, who was driving the #1 car, arrived and immediately began complaining about Andretti's trademark aggressive driving, leading to an argument. Distracted by the kerfuffle, a crew member accidentally installed one of Andretti's brake pads backwards. At 3:30 AM, Andretti left the pit, and upon approaching the first turn, he hit the non-existent brakes, and the car wrecked. Thankfully, he walked away unscathed, but his incredible second-place position was no more.
